Some Nigerians have taken to their social media accounts to assault President Bola Tinubu for rewarding the 24 gamers of the Tremendous Falcons with $100,000 every and the technical staff with $500,000.
In accordance with Tinubu’s critics on X on Monday, the money reward would have been paid in naira if he have been severe about stabilising the nation’s foreign money.
Recall that DAILY POST reported that Tinubu conferred nationwide honours and a money reward on the Tremendous Falcons for rising winners of the just-concluded Girls’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON.
The Tremendous Falcons had staged a surprise comeback to defeat the Moroccan Atlas Lionesses on Saturday.
Tinubu and his spouse, Remi Tinubu, on Monday obtained the Tremendous Falcons and the trophy.
Consequently, the presidential spokesperson, Olusegun Dada, introduced on X that Tinubu had conferred nationwide honours and money rewards on the victorious Tremendous Falcons.
Whereas some lauded the President, others condemned him.
Oke O. Matarazi, on his X account, questioned why President Tinubu would give $100,000 to footballers whereas making an attempt to stabilise the naira.
“You’re telling us we’re making an attempt to stabilise the naira, but you sprint out $100,000 to footballers and $50,000 to technical employees in overseas foreign money? In the meantime, hardworking residents and pensioners are choking beneath inflation, and producers can’t entry foreign exchange to import uncooked supplies.
“What message are we sending? That celeb applause is extra useful than financial self-discipline?
“Rewarding excellence is nice. However management can also be about symbolism, and this dollar generosity screams, “We don’t belief the naira both”, he wrote.
Equally, Ifeanyi Okafor wrote on X, “Why didn’t he pay them in Naira?”
In the meantime, Femi Yekinni recommended the President for the reward to the Tremendous Falcons, describing it as nicely merited.
“Very commendable, Mr. President. A well-merited award and presents for the ladies. They made us all proud,” he wrote on X.
