Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has accused the President Bola Tinubu-led administration of utilizing the Financial and Monetary Crimes Fee (EFCC) as a political weapon to focus on opposition figures.

Reacting to the detention of former Sokoto State Governor and Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Atiku claimed the transfer was a part of a broader agenda to “harass, intimidate, and decimate” members of the opposition coalition.

“The one motive the EFCC has detained the previous Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is as a result of he’s a member of the opposition Coalition,” Atiku stated in an announcement. “It’s a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration’s agenda to intimidate the opposition.”

The previous Vice President, who was instrumental within the institution of the EFCC throughout his time in workplace, alleged that the company’s anti-corruption drive had been “objectified” as a political software to coerce opponents into becoming a member of the ruling celebration.

“As we speak, anybody who associates with the opposition is a goal for phantom corruption allegations. As quickly as they’re coerced into the political agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, their ‘sins’ are forgiven,” he stated.

Atiku warned that such practices have been eroding institutional integrity and creating fertile floor for corruption to flourish. He pointed to a “rising development” the place anti-corruption our bodies have been allegedly being deployed to drive opposition governors and political leaders into the ruling celebration.

Whereas calling for a united entrance within the battle towards real corruption, Atiku urged civil society, Nigerians, and the worldwide group to sentence what he described as “anti-democratic machinations” geared toward railroading the nation right into a one-party state.

“We are going to by no means succumb to those ways. The usage of anti-corruption businesses as a political agenda should be roundly condemned,” he added.

The assertion on X reads, “The one motive the @officialEFCC has detained the previous Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, @AWTambuwal, is as a result of he’s a member of the opposition Coalition. It’s a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration’s agenda to harrass, intimidate, and decimate the opposition.

“The fact unfolding earlier than us right now is that the Tinubu administration, as with different elements, has objectified the battle towards corruption as a political software to coerce opposition leaders into the ruling celebration. We live witnesses to a rising development the place the state and its operators have assumed the roles of a bully by making corruption and the battle towards it a political agenda. Definitely, that’s not the target for which I labored laborious throughout our administration to create the EFCC.

“It’s as if right now, anybody who associates with the opposition is a goal for phantom corruption allegations and, it’s as if, as quickly as they’re coerced into the political agenda of President @officialABAT, their ‘sins’ are forgiven. That, positively, shouldn’t be the best way to construct establishments. That, definitely, shouldn’t be the best way to battle the monster of corruption. Certainly, such tendencies present the stimulant for corruption to thrive. We’ve got seen how the EFCC has been used to empty opposition state governors into the ruling celebration, and the tea celebration shouldn’t be about to finish anytime quickly.

“Whereas the real battle towards corruption is a matter that requires the whole help of all Nigerians, the objectification of it as a political agenda must be roundly condemned by all in civil society areas and buddies of Nigeria within the worldwide group. We’ve got in latest occasions witnessed the usage of anti-corruption businesses in coercing political leaders into the ruling celebration. Our assurance to Nigerians is that we might by no means succumb to this anti-democratic machinations of railroading our individuals right into a one-party dictatorship.”
