Former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Mukhtar Shagari, has mentioned that Nigeria shouldn’t be in hurry to start real-time transmission of election outcomes.

Shagari gave this recommendation on Friday in an interview on Come up Tv.

His remark is coming amid the controversy surrounding the place of the Senate on digital transmission of election outcomes.

DAILY POST stories that the Senate on Wednesday reportedly turned down a proposed change to Clause 60, sub-section 3 of the Electoral Modification Invoice that sought to make digital transmission of election outcomes obligatory.

Reacting, the ex-Deputy Governor mentioned, “E-transmission of election outcomes is sweet. However that is accomplished in international locations which have the mandatory issues obtainable to transmit. In Nigeria we should admit that we now have quite a lot of challenges.

“We should acknowledge that we now have challenges in electrical energy. We now have challenges even in transmission of tv, I imply providers and all this type of factor and so forth so forth. So I consider that we shouldn’t be in a rush to start out transmitting election outcomes real-time.

“We should always attempt to be sure that we good our elections as a result of we nonetheless have issues so far as our elections are involved. We’re studying. Don’t neglect that even America that has over 200 years of democracy continues to be having issues in transmitting election outcomes. It has occurred through the the administration of President George Bush.

“So America, with all its expertise in elections, expertise and so forth, couldn’t have an ideal election in terms of problems with transmission of outcomes, not to mention Nigeria.”
