A nationwide blackout is looming as the facility producing firms (GenCos) stated they could be pressured to close down their thermal energy crops following strike directives from the Petroleum and Pure Fuel Senior Employees Affiliation of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
The manager secretary of the Affiliation of Energy Producing Corporations, Dr. Pleasure Ogaji, confirmed the event in a message to stakeholders on Sunday. She revealed that gasoline suppliers had already issued notices to halt provide to thermal energy stations in compliance with the union’s directive.
LEADERSHIP checks reveal that thermal energy crops at the moment generate over 70 per cent of the facility on the nationwide grid.
“Thermal GenCos have acquired notification from our gasoline suppliers to close down our thermal energy crops following directives from PENGASSAN. The Nigerian Fuel Infrastructure Firm has particularly requested GenCos to conform,” Ogaji said.
She cautioned that hydroelectric dams alone can not maintain the nationwide grid, warning of “imminent darkness” if the strike proceeds.
The warning comes shortly after PENGASSAN introduced plans to start an indefinite nationwide strike motion on Monday over the dismissal of greater than 800 employees on the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
The union, after an emergency NEC assembly on Saturday, directed its members throughout the oil and gasoline sector to down instruments till the dismissals have been reversed.
Business specialists stated the strike motion may paralyse crude manufacturing, gasoline provide, gasoline distribution, and electrical energy technology. With thermal crops accountable for over 70 per cent of Nigeria’s energy provide, analysts feared that the shutdown might overwhelm hydro energy stations and set off a complete grid collapse.
