Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has known as on the Unbiased Nationwide Electoral Fee, INEC, to urgently rethink the February 20, 2027 date introduced for the following common elections, describing it as insensitive and poorly judged.

DAILY POST experiences that INEC had fastened February 20, 2027 for the nationwide polls, a date that falls throughout the Ramadan interval, scheduled to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027.

In an announcement posted on his verified X deal with, Atiku argued that conducting elections throughout Ramadan might negatively have an effect on participation and undermine inclusivity within the electoral course of.

In line with him, fixing such an important civic exercise in the course of a significant non secular observance displays poor judgment and a scarcity of sensitivity to Nigeria’s socio-religious realities.

“The Unbiased Nationwide Electoral Fee (INEC) should urgently rethink the February 20, 2027 date it has introduced for the final elections. That date falls squarely throughout the Ramadan interval (February 7 – March 8, 2027), a sacred season of fasting, reflection, and non secular devotion for hundreds of thousands of Nigerian Muslims.

“Elections are usually not mere administrative rituals; they’re nationwide workouts that demand most participation, bodily endurance, and collective focus. Fixing such a crucial civic train in the course of a significant non secular observance displays poor judgment and a troubling lack of sensitivity to the nation’s socio-religious realities.

“In a various nation like Nigeria, inclusive planning is just not non-obligatory, it’s elementary. One thing as fundamental as selecting a broadly acceptable date shouldn’t be mishandled. It speaks to competence, foresight, and respect for residents.

“If INEC struggles with getting a easy matter of timing proper, Nigerians are justified in asking: what assurance do we have now that it’ll competently ship free, honest, and credible elections in 2027?,” the assertion learn.
