The Senate on Tuesday appointed 12 members to work with the Home of Representatives to harmonise the controversial modification to the Electoral Modification Act, following current public uproar over the invoice.

The announcement was made by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, throughout an emergency plenary session.

In response to Akpabio, the committee will liaise with their counterparts within the Home of Representatives to reconcile variations between the 2 chambers’ variations of the invoice.

The appointed lawmakers embody Senators Abba Moro, Asuquo Ekpenyong, Orji Uzor Kalu, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, and Jibrin Isa Ochocho.

Akpabio urged the lawmakers to fulfill on time and resolve the problems so the president can signal the invoice this month.

The Electoral Modification Act has confronted widespread debate, significantly over provisions associated to the digital transmission of election outcomes.

Critics have argued that the Senate’s changes, together with the elimination of the phrase “real-time” from the e-transmission clause, may undermine transparency and electoral credibility forward of the 2027 normal elections.

The joint committee is anticipated to deliberate on these contentious points, together with voting timelines, transmission of outcomes, and different technical reforms, earlier than presenting a harmonised model for remaining approval by each chambers.
