Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, has apologised for downgrading Afrobeats and distancing himself from the style.
DAILY POST remembers that Burna Boy sparked controversy in 2023 after saying Afrobeats has no lyrical substance and disassociated himself from the style.
In a current interview with BBC’s Eddie Kadi, Burna Boy defined that he didn’t realise again then that African artists want Afrobeats as an umbrella style to thrive.
He defined that he selected to name his type Afrofusion as a result of he didn’t assume he might slot in into Afrobeats class within the early days of his profession.
The ‘Final Final’ crooner acknowledged that he has now realised that African artists need to be united and never divided alongside genres, to push the continent’s music ahead.
He apologised for his controversial comment, claiming he was in a “darkish place mentally” when he made the assertion.
He stated, “I didn’t perceive why folks wished my music to be inside one field. The best way I noticed it, should you simply put the whole lot into Afrobeats, you’re now evaluating Socrates to Kendrick Lamar as a result of they each stated two issues that rhyme in order that they each should be rappers…
“I didn’t realise we wanted Afrobeats tag as an umbrella to go to wherever. I completely get it now and I apologise for that confusion.”
