    Russia confirms ban on WhatsApp

    Russia has blocked the favored messaging service WhatsApp over its failure to adjust to native laws, the Kremlin mentioned Thursday, urging its 100 million Russian customers to modify to a home various.

    Moscow has for months been attempting to shift Russian customers onto Max, a home messaging service that lacks end-to-end encryption and that activists have known as a possible instrument for surveillance.

    “As for the blocking of WhatsApp … such a choice was certainly made and carried out,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters.

    Peskov mentioned the choice was because of WhatsApp’s “reluctance to adjust to the norms and letter of Russian regulation”.

    “Max is an accessible various, a creating messenger, a nationwide messenger. And it’s another obtainable in the marketplace for residents,” he mentioned.

    WhatsApp, owned by US social media large Meta, mentioned Wednesday that it believed Russia was trying to totally block the service in a bid to power customers onto Max.

    Critics and rights campaigners say the restrictions are a clear try by the Kremlin to ramp up management and surveillance over web use in Russia.
