    FG to end fish importation, introduces sector reforms

    Minister of Marine and Blue Economic system, Adegboyega Oyetola, has disclosed plans to finish Nigeria’s reliance on imported fish by boosting native manufacturing via complete reforms within the aquaculture and fisheries sector.

    In a press release signed by Dr. Bolaji Akinola,  Particular Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, the minister made the disclosure at a gathering with fisheries cooperative teams in Abuja.

    He said that the federal government is decided to reposition the sector as a essential driver of meals safety, job creation, and export growth.

    “Nigeria should chart a brand new course in the direction of self-sufficiency in fish manufacturing,” Oyetola mentioned, including that the Federal Authorities is absolutely dedicated to supporting the fisheries and aquaculture subsector via coverage, technical help, and monetary inclusion.  

    “We are going to scale up home fish manufacturing, cut back dependency on imports, and reposition the sector for sustainable development,” he mentioned.

    The assembly introduced collectively main trade stakeholders, together with the Fisheries Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (FCFN), Tilapia Aquaculture Builders Affiliation of Nigeria (TADAN), Catfish Farmers Affiliation of Nigeria (CAFAN), Ladies in Fish Farming and Aquaculture, and the Practising Farmers Affiliation of Nigeria.

    Oyetola disclosed that the Ministry is intensifying efforts to empower girls and youth with start-up grants and different help initiatives.

    He said additional: “Rising youth participation in aquaculture shouldn’t be solely very important for meals manufacturing but in addition a strategic resolution to decreasing unemployment.

    “We’re dedicated to making sure that younger folks and ladies are usually not left behind on this transformation.”

    In his welcome tackle, Everlasting Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Olufemi Oloruntola, famous that the assembly was in fulfilment of commitments made by the Minister throughout the Ministry’s second-quarter residents and stakeholders engagement held in Lagos on third July.  

    He reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to construct enduring partnerships with cooperative societies to drive inclusive development.
