    Associate professors in Delta-owned varsities to retire at 70

    Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has accepted the extension of the retirement age for affiliate professors in state-owned universities from 65 to 70 years.

    The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Increased Schooling, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, throughout an interview with journalists on Friday in Asaba.

    He described the transfer as a strategic and compassionate choice aimed toward strengthening the tutorial system, increasing postgraduate packages, and fostering mentorship for youthful lecturers.

    Tonukari famous that the approval aligned Delta with federal coverage, which was amended in 2012 to increase the retirement age for educational workers within the professorial cadre to 70 and for non-academic workers to 65.

    Whereas the legislation had been beforehand domesticated for Delta State College, the present approval prolonged its full implementation to all state-owned universities.

    “In 2012, the Federal Authorities amended the legislation to increase the retirement age of educational workers to 70 years.

    “Now, His Excellency has magnanimously prolonged this to affiliate professors throughout all state universities,” he mentioned.

    Addressing considerations that the prolonged retirement age may restrict alternatives for youthful teachers, Tonukari defined that the state’s important enlargement in tertiary schooling had created quite a few educational positions.

    “Since 2023, greater than 600 educational and non-academic workers have been recruited throughout our universities, polytechnics, and faculties of schooling as a result of ongoing development and accreditation efforts,” he said.

    He lauded Oborevwori’s administration for investing within the improvement of Southern Delta College, Ozoro; Dennis Osadebay College, Asaba; College of Delta, Agbor; and the brand new Southern Delta College campus in Orerokpe.
